Winterset

A bit of history.........The name Winterset comes from an earlier house on the site that would have dated from the late 1700’s or early 1800’s which was originally built for use as a hunting and fishing lodge. Henry LeMessurier was the first known “family occupant” of the house which was occupied by three generations of the LeMessurier family. Henry C. Lemessurier contributed to the font of Newfoundland history as there is a publication of a Lecture that he delivered on May 10th, 1915 at Grenfell Hall called “ancient St. John’s”. Three subsequent publications included: A Lecture on Placentia; Historic Points of interest in Newfoundland; and Early Relations between Nfld and the Channel Islands.

Winterset was purchased by a banker, Claude Fraser. His daughter Sandra, married Richard Gwyn.

This is the choice location you’ve been waiting for, nestled neatly on the Rennies River, situated on a very generous sized property with mature trees and close to all downtown amenities! From this home one can hike the Rennies River trail to MUN / Long Pond and in the other direction, around Quidi Vidi Lake and to Signal Hill.

This 2278 sq. ft. home was well built in the spring of 1958 with great attention to elegant, spacious rooms and comfortable living. The angel stone brick façade is ultra-low maintenance and is in excellent condition. Large, numerous windows capture excellent light and viewing of the river and nature beyond.

Tom Lench (Architect), and a Charter member of the Newfoundland Association of Architects in 1949 and later served as President, designed this classic post-confederation “new moderne” home with three bedrooms and two and one half baths for the busy family. With some contemporary upgrades and tasteful renovation to enhance the large elegant spaces for dining, entertaining and lounging, you would never want to leave this Winterest.

The 50’s era galley-style kitchen has a large pantry/mud room with exit to the garden, several appliances and a family eating nook. All laundry and utilities are conveniently located nearby with a slight descent from the main level.

Many recent major upgrades have occurred on nearby properties, thereby enhancing this neighbourhood for the long term enjoyment of all. In addition, many high end homes have been built across the street on Judge Place.

This is clearly the last of the large lots on Winter Ave and one of the last remaining in the east end, South of Elizabeth Ave. Total acreage is .73 acres with 134 ft 10.35 inches frontage and 147 ft 7.65 inches on the Rennies River Trail / Rennies River.

Asking price is $669,000.
