Indian Arm, Summerville, Bonavista Bay

Outstanding heritage Waterfront property in Summerville Harbour

115 Meters / 377 ft frontage on Indian Arm with .743 hectares / 1.836 acres

Summerville was first settled in the early 1800’s and The Joseph and Carolyn Tilley House, possible the oldest home in the area, is a registered Heritage Structure by The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador www.heritagenl.ca . It is thought to have been built circa 1830-1840. Its vertical full studded timber construction helps to estimate the age of this structure which could be labeled as a cross over between a first and second generation tradition Newfoundland Saltbox.

The community was originally called Indian Arm and was renamed to Summerville in 1914. Settlement came about because the area was “well wooded” and appeared to have agricultural potential. It also had a sheltered harbour which facilitated an active fishery.

In 1874, there was a major fire in Summerville (referred to locally as Rod’s Fire) and most of the homes were destroyed . Tilley House, given it secluded waterfront location, survived the fire.

The property is thought to be the first evidence of a family-run operation in Summerville that included fishing, farming and animal husbandry. The house once held many children, and a horse-and-buggy trail circled around the property. Next to this trail is the still-extant wharf used for fishing in the 1800’s to modern times, and the root cellar entry still stands awaiting restoration by a new owner who may wish to store root vegetables over winter.

The architectural simplicity and outstanding façade symmetry is complemented by 3/3 and 3/6 windows and traditional spruce clapboards and corner boards highlight the vernacular treatment.

The house has been restored by a local artisans including Mike Paterson and Aiden Duff and features a cedar roof, hand-made wood windows and storms, along with all the usual period details. The roof is shingled with enduring cedar shingles.

The interior shows framed artifacts discovered within the house when it was first restored, and some original furniture. There is a Victorian soaker tub, shower and 1.5 bathrooms (one upstairs, one down).

Enjoy the warmth from the cast iron wood stove and relax in the enamel cast iron soaker tub

The property also includes as substantial outbuilding, measuring 20 ft by 16 ft which could readily be converted to guest accommodations or used as a studio or space for garden supplies. Underground electrical service connects power in the outbuilding to the 200 amp service in the house.

Swimmers can enjoy the beach below the property .

Some refer to this area as the tropics of the Bonavista Peninsula and it does indeed have a bit of a micro-climate when compared with the rests of the district.

This waterfront property is the perfect location to use as home base for boating as one can readily explore the sheltered waters of Newman and Clode Sound in Terra Nova National Park https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/nl/terranova , and all the inlets and long draughts of Bonavista Bay. In addition, a trip by boat to the the Eastport Peninsula https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastport_Peninsula , including Salvage https://www.facebook.com/VisitSalvageNL/ and Happy Adventure https://www.facebook.com/happyadventureinn/ makes for a very pleasant afternoon adventure.

There is a very deep trench just outside Summerville which is the summer home for Sperm Whales, and Humpback and Minky whales occupy the bay throughout the summer season.

The area is also outstanding for enjoyment of a meal of cod and a feed of tongues during the summer food fishery. In addition, Summerville is an active area for the commercial fishery and a variety of seafoods can be bought directly from fishermen throughout the season.

Hikers ( http://hikediscovery.com/ ) will be amazed at the options presented in the area and on the peninsula. In addition, this area is among the best in the province for picking wild blueberries and partridgeberries. In fact blueberries grow in abundance on this property. Bakeapples can be found if you endear your self to local residents who may know those special spots. The same applies the fabulous gourmet Chanterelle mushrooms.

Once can find a variety of sites on the peninsula and there are a few highlighted below for your viewing pleasure.

Those wishing to view, simply drive into Summerville as as the community becomes visible, turn right on Church Road. Keep left at the Brennan’s Pt. fork in the road. Proceed towards the harbour and take the lane to the right going up the hill and as you go down the other side, the house is apparent.
