The Trinity Bight comprises twelve communities between English Harbour and New Bonaventure with Trinity 15.8 km from New Bonaventure on route 239, between the two “Bookends of the Bight”. New Bonaventure is a traditional outport fishing community, with a mix of permanent and seasonal residents.

Over the past number of years the area has captured the imagination of the international and local film industry and has repeatedly been selected as the chosen spot to film in Newfoundland. It has been used as the primary location for the filming of the CBC mini-series Random Passage, The Shipping News and The Grand Seduction. Physical sets from both Random Passage and the Grand Seduction can still be visited.

The Miller house is a registered Heritage structure that was built in 1917 and the unique architecture suggests a vernacular response to more “fashionable style” with a curved / arched roof. Given the history of boat building in the Trinity Bight, this style would not have represented a significant challenge for those shaping wooden fishing boats. However, there are just a few such houses remaining and a rarity in the area and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

The house was occupied by Priscilla after Edwin’s passing in 1942 and she remained in residence until the late 1950’s, after which the house was purchased by fisherman Sam Miller and his wife Theodocia. “Aunt Thea” was much loved in the community and well known for her hospitality. Theodosia remained in the house until 1973 and left the property to her son Giles Miller.

In 1997 the current owners purchased the property and began the restoration process which was culminated by the designation as a Registered Heritage Structure on March 27, 2003 by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador as a representative example of local vernacular architectural expression, and for the completeness of its historical context.

The reader and the movie buff will recall the book Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx and Lasse Hallstrom’s subsequent movie starring Judi Dench, Kevin Spacey and Julianne Moore. The movie, which was filmed in the area features the Miller house as a prominent shooting location as the exterior was filmed as Jack Buggit’s house and the interior was filmed as Dennis and Beatie Buggit’s house.

The house is well situated in the central core of the traditional community, and a stone’s throw from the community wharf and when Gerald and Shirley Miller return from their fishing grounds, fresh fish can be purchased for the table. The Harbour Authority of Bonaventure accommodates private boats under 30 feet in length to tie up for a mere $50 per annum. From this location one can enjoy visiting resettled communities including Ireland’s Eye, British Harbour, Little Harbour, Pope’s Harbour, Black Duck Cove, etc. In addition Bruce Miller operated Rugged Beauty Boat Tours from the New Bonaventure wharf http://www.ruggedbeautyboattours.net/

Gardeners will enjoy fact that there is a sod covered root cellar adjacent to the house, complete with a front porch to ensure that your root vegetable can stay fresh throughout the winter months.

Viewers of the photographs on this site will realize that this is an outstanding home, lovingly restored and very well appointed by the current owners. All the heavy lifting has been done and includes such infrastructure as foundation reinforcement, rewiring with 200 amp electrical service, deep drilled well with potable water and East-Heat in line water pipe heater, torched on roof, new linhay structure 12 ft by 22 ft built to equivalent of R-2000 standards that includes, ½ bath / laundry room / utility room / spacious porch / home office, all new pex piping, Stelpro Orleans High End Convector Electric wall mount heaters, and built in Maestro WiFi / internet controlled smart home thermostats with Zigbee protocol.

Furnishings are generally in keeping with the period and are negotiable.

All of the exterior of the house is traditional with wooden clapboard / corner boards, and recessed front door with patterned glass window and decorative lintel and side panels.

Inside, the home, in addition to the linhay referenced above has a central hall , traditional parlour / living room, large dining area which would have served a kitchen area when built, along with an efficient galley kitchen with enamel sink. Upstairs originally would have had four bedrooms and one was converted to a spacious bathroom complete with porcelain claw foot soaker tub with shower screen.

The interior architectural appointment such as staircase, door trim, wooden ceilings and floors are still in place and enhances as necessary throughout the restoration. One enhancement is the striking yellow and green tiled floor in the dining and kitchen areas. There is also an outstanding “Enterprise” CSA certified combination, wood, coal and oil stove in the dining area that can be an incredible source of heat and convenient for cooking and warming food.

The spacious main floor measures approximately 950 sq ft with about another 650 sq ft on the second floor
