The Elephant Shop Boutique was successfully operated by Elizabeth J. Zemdegs since 2011, when the stars lined up and she and her husband Glenn this property which would have been built c.1870.

Elizabeth had a vision for a high end retail shop and gallery, before there was the vibrant downtown area that exists in Bonavista today. Before she had a location selected, she started to order inventory and had faith that the right location would materialize.

Then one day Elizabeth phoned the President of the Townscape Project to ask what may be available. Out of the blue his wife saw a sign -the Vet’s house was for sale. Within minutes put in an offer and The Elephant Shop Boutique was established.

Many amusing questions arose when the name was visible as Bonavista , which has a strong connection with Humpback whales on the ocean doorstep, had no connection with Elephants. However, I visitors and many locals had to check it out due to curiosity arising from the name.

With a local store owner graciously showing Elizabeth how to use her cash register on the day of opening, the business went on to flourish with a gift shop, with a focus on jewellery and cashmere located on the main floor, and art gallery on the second floor.

With grandchildren calling in Upper Canada, Elizabeth and Glenn have decided that it is time to move on to spend precious time with family. So, their beloved retail premises will be sold to someone else to allow their dreams to grow and flourish.
This shop/House sits now in the busiest part of Church Street -clients eat across the street at Mifflin’s Tea Room, a quiet B&B is on this quiet lane, The Post Office always busy is diagonally from the shop, The GARRICK Theatre is around the corner, and so on.

The property sits empty, awaiting new owners with a new and vibrant vision. The exterior of the property was restored in 2006 with all new clapboard, new chimney, new windows and cedar shingles.

The first floor, with 564 sq ft, was renovated in 2011 and second floor, with 453 sq ft, in 2012 by Dellar Contracting. Both levels are full open concept and the second floor has a vaulted ceiling. Electrical was undertaken by Lodge Electrical and included lighting to meet the needs of a retail shop and art gallery.

This property lends itself to a variety of options from a commercial perspective, but could also be converted back to a single family home. However, interested parties should note that HST will apply to the purchase price which should not be an issue for a commercial entity that could use the input tax credit.

Asking price is $89000 plus HST.
