ODeas Auction Room held an estate sale on October 10, 2002 at the Star Hall on Henry St. This sale had a broad range of items and the results were somewhat mixed, but overall, it was a very successful sale. Many clients walked away with a few bargains, while there was very competitive and intense bidding on a few items. This does point out that there is usually something for everyone at our estate sales, and the perception that prices are unaffordable on most items is incorrect. Yes there are occasional items that sell at a premium, but these are normally items that warrant such attention. In fact ODeas Auction Room takes pride in the attention paid to select items, particularly those with a Newfoundland connection. When you scroll through the photos of a sampling of the 300 items sold, you can view the prices that were realized at the sale. Please note the results for the Mahogany Writing Box. It realized a price of $1650. This is one of those select items with a Newfoundland connection. However, the Newfoundland connection was unknown until Chris ODea spent a few house in the archives researching the name G.J. Hayward. By uncovering the provenance (PLEASE CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE PROVENANCE OF THE WRITING BOX), it is estimated that the price realized was three time what it would have been, had the provenance not been determined. This effort on behalf of ODeas Auction Room serves everyone: the buyer takes great satisfaction in having purchased a unique Newfoundland item; the seller derives maximum value; and the provenance tells us all more about our rich history. This extra service from ODeas Auction Room clearly differentiates our effort on behalf of our clients in the estate field, and we would be pleased to offer the same service to others that may have a need.
